Why it's tricky

In our last email we introduced the concept of ambiguous objects: images that your visual system might perceive in more than one way. Scientists report that our visual system tends to perceive these objects as if they're being viewed from above. This means that we'd expect brighter surfaces to appear on top, as if illuminated by the sun overhead.

This brain teaser design takes advantage of your visual system through its clever use of color — the bright yellow/orange colors appear on top of each cube, while the darker orange and black appear on the sides. Because of this, you may be tricked into counting only 6 cubes when it's possible to find 7!

Now that you understand the science, can you count all the cubes without the animation?

Can you answer this brain teaser?

We're getting a kick out of brain teasers. Check out this email to see if you can solve our hardest one yet!

How many cubes can you find?

Seems simple enough, right? There's more to this image than meets the eye. This design takes advantage of what our resident scientists call ambiguous objects: images that your visual system might perceive in more than one way.

To put it simply, the number of cubes you spot depends entirely on which visual cues you use to interpret the image. More on that (and the answer) this Thursday!

Feeling stuck?

Don't let this brain teaser get you down — you'll have the answer in your inbox in no time! For now, jump back into your training with today's workout.
