Let's learn more about how our scientists used experimental research to create this fun and tricky game. What is divided attention? Divided attention is your ability to process multiple sources of information at once. This may sound like multitasking, but it's a little different. Whereas multitasking involves completely shifting your attention between different tasks, divided attention allows you to more evenly distribute your attention across multiple tasks.
Just think about all the things you do while driving a car. You keep your speed steady, watch for stop signs, use your turn signal — all at the same time. Without your divided attention skills, you wouldn't be able to do these tasks simultaneously. The research that inspired our scientists While looking for inspiration, our scientists found a 2006 cognitive research task involving a computer simulation of a familiar activity: cooking breakfast. The study participants had to balance several dishes, set tables, and finish all the cooking at the same time — helping the researchers understand how people balance multiple cognitive skills at once.
Sound familiar? In Trouble Brewing you also take on multiple tasks, but our scientists made some key changes. They removed the table-setting and focused on the cooking — or in our case, making coffee. Whereas the original research task emphasized other skills like planning, these changes were intended to isolate the part that most engages your divided attention skills. To do this effectively, you'll need to manage your time carefully. This means dividing your attention between starting new orders, keeping an eye on current orders, and stopping them when they're full.
